Enjoy and remember if you have further questions feel free to comment below or email kati at info@bearsetc.org!
1. The “Cat People” podcast (https://www.google.com/…/cat-people-a-new-podcast-v7zU…/amp/) examines the strange relationships some Americans have with big cats and the legal loopholes that have made this country home to more captive tigers than there are left in the wild. The first episode details an incident in 2011 when a man in Zanesville, OH released forty some big cats and bears from his property and then shot himself. Great fun all around.
2. The Elephant in the Living Room (http://www.theelephantinthelivingroom.com/) is an excellent documentary that delves deep inside the controversial American subculture of raising the most dangerous animals in the world as common household pets.
3. The ever-amazing National Geographic Magazine did a feature article on the problem of captive tigers last year (https://www.google.com/…/tigers-in-the-united-states-outnum…)
4. Find out what zoos, aquariums, and sanctuaries in the world are accredited (AZA, GFAS, etc), meaning they are held to the highest standards of animal welfare, and support them. I’ve said in previous posts the vast majority of people who work in the zoo industry would be happy to see all of those animals in the wild, and people who work at sanctuaries are trying to educate the masses and get legislation passed that could quite literally put them out of a job. It’s important to know who you’re fighting for, and by supporting accredited facilities you are fighting for the health and well-being of wild animals.
